Code of Conduct

Silicon Village promotes a safe and consent based environment, free from harassment and abuse of members and visitors in our Online presence, at meetings, events and On Playa. All violations of either the letter or the spirit of the Code of Conduct will result in review by the Leadership team following the guidelines below. The Leadership Team has full authority to determine what actions to take and to escalate the actions based on the seriousness of the offense.

Online Content

Silicon Village promotes a safe and consent based environment, free from harassment and abuse of members and visitors in our Online presence, at meetings, events and On Playa.   All violations of either the letter or the spirit of the Code of Conduct will result in review by the Leadership team following the guidelines below. The Leadership Team has full authority to determine what actions to take and to escalate the actions based on the seriousness of the offense. This extends to the Yahoo Group and discussions on our Facebook page or any forum for the Village such as distribution lists run by, or in the name of, Silicon Village.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Do not post content that is discriminatory or abusive in relation to a person’s race, color, national origin, age, religion, disability status, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status.
  • Do not use threatening or harassing language towards another individual or organization.
  • Do not create a hostile environment for our members.
  • Do not use excessive profanity in postings.
  • Do not post content that endangers a minor or encourages violations of local, state or federal statutes.
  • Do not post content that is not directly related to the event or to the aid of members of the community.
  • Do be friendly and get to know people in our community.
  • Do be polite and civil in your discourse and content.
  • Do be mindful that we have a diverse background of members when posting content.
  • Do post helpful information for other members in our community.
  • Do adhere to the ten principles of Burning Man.
  • Do join in discussions to help Silicon Village or its members.
  • Do have fun!

Progression of violations

  1. The first offense will be a warning and the content will be removed.
  2. The second offense will be that the user is placed on moderation for posting content on the applicable forum (e.g. Yahoo vs. Facebook) and is given a second warning. The moderation will be for a period of six months to a year.
  3. The third offense will be a permanent state of moderation.

In cases where there may have been extreme actions (e.g. threats of harm) the Leadership Team may take further action at its discretion.

In cases of minor infractions the Leadership Team may impose a lesser restriction at its discretion.

Moderation

  • Moderators (assigned by the Leadership Team) can take action as needed for the content of the post and then discuss with the full Leadership Team on the next course of action.
  • In the event that the content is extreme in its nature (e.g. against a minor or a death threat) then the Leadership Team reserves the right to take any and all necessary actions.
  • The Leadership Team has full authority to take action on content posted in these forums and has full authority to determine what actions to take and how to define abusive behavior, in its sole discretion.


Code of Conduct for In Person Interactions

The Leadership Team has full authority to determine what actions to take and to escalate the actions based on the seriousness of the offense.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Do not act in an abusive manner towards a person’s race, color, national origin, age, religion, disability status, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and marital status.
  • Do not harass or threaten another individual or organization.
  • Do not engage in physical harm against another individual.
  • Do not engage in unwanted contact with another individual.
  • Do not create a hostile environment for our members and visitors.
  • Do not take actions which would put a minor in danger.
  • Do ask permission before touching another person.
  • Do adhere to the ten principles of Burning Man.
  • Do help others in the Village who are in need.
  • Do be polite and civil in your interactions.
  • Do be aware of your safe spaces and contacts in the event a need arises.
  • Do be friendly and get to know the people you meet.
  • Do have fun!

Regarding handling violations of the code of conduct.

  • Silicon Village will establish a safe place to take people until help arrives and then contact a Ranger or Law Enforcement for assistance.
  • We will help educate villagers on the functionality of Rangers.
  • Our new policy will be part of the user agreement when you pay for your camping fees.
  • All reports of violation of the Code will be housed in Silicon Village Leadership files.

Progression of violations – In Person

  1. First offense the violator will receive a warning from Village Leadership or a POD Leader or Meeting Host and reparations may be required.
  2. Second offense the violator will be placed on a probationary period of six months at all Silicon Village events, reparations may be required and they will be placed on moderation in Silicon Village social media.
  3. Third offense the violator will not be allowed in Silicon Village events for a minimum of the current and following event year, up to and including permanent banishment. They will also be taken off of Silicon Village social media and have reparations.

Given the severity of the offense, the Leadership Team reserves the right to immediate and/or indefinite expulsion from the Village
